Here we offer a range of Dutch Ovens from our original Stansport Cast Iron range through to a couple of locally* sourced Dutch Ovens. The sizes vary from 2qt Dutch Ovens upto 20Qt Dutch Ovens. The most commonly used sizes are the 4qt and 8qt sized items.
A 4qt Dutch oven will cook a reasonable sized chicken or joint of meat along with some vegetables and can cater for upto 4 people. An 8qt Dutch oven will easily double this capacity and is ideal for 4 -10 persons.
We have Dutch Ovens with and without legs. The flat based models can be used on campfire tri-pods, campfire grills or on hotplates and ovens in a home environment. The models with legs are equally suitable but sometimes awkward to sit on a grill or oven rack because the pesky legs are in the wrong place. The advantage of having legs is that the Dutch Ovens will stack on top of one another when used for group cooking. Some will stack 3 or 4 ovens on a stack to achieve a meal, takes some doing and I haven't tried this myself, yet!
Most of the Cast Iron Dutch Ovens we now supply are un-seasoned. You will need to go through the seasoning process before you cook with your cast iron product, whether this is a Dutch oven, Fry Pan, Griddle or other item. It is a fairly simple process. Wash the new product with some warm soapy water and dry thoroughly. Place the item in the oven and dry it out, it is essential rust does not form on the Cast Iron or you will need to start again. Once dry, coat the cooking surface with oil. We use a ground nut oil. but this may not be for everybody. Place the Cast Iron back into the hot oven, upside down to allow surplus oil to run out and heat thoroughly for an hour or so at about 200 degrees Cent. Do not forget to do the lid of the Dutch Oven as well. It is not necessary to do the outside of the oven but it must remain rust free.
When you have finished cooking, clean the oven thoroughly using warm water but as little detergent as possible. You need to remove the food residue, thoroughly dry the oven, re-oil and dry in the hot oven again if you can or heat it over the fire.
